Ramp changes exercises by role and hiring cycle, but current full-time loops emphasize building and extending working systems.

Ramp's software engineering loop tests how you apply engineering principles as requirements change. Candidates for full-time roles recently completed a recruiter screen, a progressive coding challenge, a technical screen, and a four-stage virtual onsite covering coding, AI-assisted work, system design, and behavioral judgment.

What to Expect: Ramp Interview Process

The first round is a short recruiter screen about your background, motivation, and work you've shipped. You may then complete a 90-minute assessment in which you develop a small system through several levels of complexity. Next comes a technical phone screen, followed by an onsite loop that may involve working with an existing codebase, pairing with an AI tool, designing a service, and demonstrating ownership. Formats vary by role and hiring cycle, so ask the recruiter which ones apply.

How to Prepare and Pass Ramp Interviews

If you regularly build production applications, give yourself four to six weeks. If you need to rebuild concurrency and state-modeling skills, give yourself six to eight weeks.

  • Read the full specification first. Progressive exercises penalize you for using a data model that cannot accommodate the next requirement. State your assumptions before you code, and keep the first version simple.
  • Build parsers, stateful services, small interfaces, and query layers. Test ordering, duplicate events, and invalid input.
  • Explain product tradeoffs. Explain why you chose a model, how it can fail, and how you would monitor it. Use Lodely to bring your company's coding practices, system design, and behavioral preparation into a full-loop practice session.

Ramp Interview Breakdown

Flights Tracking

Ramp Interview Question
Medium
Flights Tracking
coding
Implement the requested flight-state operations while keeping updates and queries consistent as requirements expand.
Open Question on Lodely Free to get started

Type: Stateful coding. The trick: Treating each operation in isolation can make the flight's state inconsistent. Define how updates arrive, what queries should return, and how to handle two flights that reference the same update or an update that does not exist. What it tests: Data modeling, correctness, and extensibility.

Snake Case to Camel Case Conversion

Type: String transformation. The Trick: Inputs may contain repeated separators, no text, leading separators, or already normalized text. Define the transformation rules before implementing them. What it tests: boundary handling and clean code.

Calendar View

Type: Applied interface coding. The trick: Rendering events or querying time ranges can produce overlap bugs without a consistent model for time ranges. Keep event storage, normalization, and display logic separate. What it tests: Decomposition and implementation with a product mindset.

Additional questions include React Component, Rock Paper Scissors, and Calendar. They test component state and UI behavior, predictable game-state transitions, and event ordering and overlap rules.

What Comes After The Interview

Recent candidates report decisions one to two weeks after the onsite, although headcount and reference checks can take longer. In September 2026, U.S. new graduates reported total compensation of $228K ($90K base plus $138K equity); software engineers, $300K ($160K base plus $140K equity); senior engineers, $510K ($230K base plus $280K equity); and staff engineers, $786K ($420K base plus $366K equity). Private-company equity makes up much of these packages, so ask about grant size, valuation, vesting, and liquidity assumptions.

Candidate Experiences

A candidate with three years of experience who was hired for a recent backend role described a 25-minute recruiter screen, a 90-minute progressive assessment, and a 60-minute design-focused technical screen. The virtual onsite had four rounds covering coding, system design, and detailed behavioral follow-up. The candidate received an offer nine days later. The candidate's ability to build small systems end to end and explain the reasoning stood out most. Practice the full process as well as individual answers.

Conclusion

Ramp rewards engineers who turn specifications into working code and explain it clearly. Use Lodely to practice the selected questions and demonstrate coding, design, and ownership.
